What is the Statistics Competition?

The Statistics Competition is a competition organized by the Statistical Service of Cyprus, the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth, the University of Cyprus and the Cyprus Statistical Society, with the aim to promote statistical literacy, curiosity and interest in official statistics among students and teachers. It is part of the European Statistics Competition organized by volunteering NSIs and Eurostat.

The main objectives of the competition are to promote curiosity and interest in statistics among students, to encourage teachers to use new materials for teaching statistics by promoting the use of real data provided by official statistics and search for applications of acquired statistical knowledge. Moreover, it aims to show the role of statistics to students and teachers in various aspects of society and to promote teamwork and collaboration among students to achieve common goals.

The competition is structured in two phases: a national competition organized by the national authorities and the European final organized by Eurostat. The first two teams of each category of the national competitions, are eligible to take part in the European final. The languages of the national competition will be Greek and English, while the European final will be in English.

The national competition will take place during the period of October 2024 – March 2025 and the European final between April and May of 2025.

Rules

The Statistics Competition is open to all secondary-age students of officially recognized educational institutions of Cyprus. Participation will take place in two categories:

  • Category A:Upper Secondary [Students of A’,B’,C’ Lyceum* aged up to 18 years on 31/12/2024]
  • Category B:Lower secondary [Students of A’,B’,C’ Gymnasium aged up to 16 years on 31/12/2024]

* Students attending the seventh grade of an educational institution are allowed to participate in the Upper Secondary Category provided that they comply with the age restriction.

Participation is free of charge and there can be a maximum of 4 teams from the same institution. In cases of sixth-grade or seventh-grade schools, up to 6 (six) teams can participate, with a maximum of 3 (three) teams per category.

Students will work in teams of 2 to 3, all of them from the same school and category. All teams must have a teacher from their school acting as a tutor, who will supervise their work and generally perform a coordinating role and communicate with the organizers. There is no limitation on the number of teams supervised by the same tutor.

The national phase of the competition includes 2 (two) assignments. All teams will take part in the first qualifying assignment. Based on the teams' scores, the first 10 (ten) in each category will proceed to the second assignment. The winning team in each category will be determined by the score of the second assignment.

Awards

National phase:

The winning teams of the national competition, one from Category A and one from Category B will be awarded the following prizes:

  • For each student of the winning team: The amount of €200
  • For the tutor:  A tablet
  • For the educational institution: An honorary plaque.

The teams in the second place of the national phase, one from Category A and one from Category B will be awarded the following prizes:
• For each student of the team: The amount of €100
• For the tutor: A graphic tablet

 

In addition, the jury may grant an honourable mention to any team.

 

In case of having two winning teams with the same tutor, the tutor will only receive one prize.

All the teams participating in the first assignment will receive a participation diploma. The teams that will qualify to the second assignment will additionally receive, a distinction diploma.

European phase:

Each member and the tutor of the two winning teams of the European final (categories A and B) will receive the following prizes:

  • A gift card (€400)
  • Promotional material from Eurostat
  • A diploma
  • A trophy

There will also be trophies for the second and third team.

All finalists will receive a customized diploma mentioning the place they obtained. The rest of the participating teams in the European phase will receive a diploma of participation.
